If you play single player, you can play different patches - there have been a couple of massive gameplay changes as patches progressed which adds even more variety. Because of this, you can replay the 7 base characters multiple times and have a different gameplay experience. Some of those builds are built around a specific item, whilst others are generic. There are literally hundreds of possible builds that are end game capable, so the variety is huge. I will caveat this by saying that I pretty much play single player only on both which is not the usual way of playingĭ2: D2 is a deep game, both in terms of lore and gameplay.

But right now, unless you're a diehard arpg fan and somehow haven't played d2 yet, I wouldn't pick up d2. I think that in the grand scheme of things d2 is a better game overall and also historically more significant. The game mechanics are also different between each game-many of the dog-eat-dog elements of D2 (stealing loot, final boss rushes, power leveling) are downplayed or simply removed in D3.Different games both good. (Even the Easter eggs are obscure and most likely won't be things you remember from a normal playthrough.) And even after all this, D2 is a very long journey to undertake alone. The only benefit to you now, pre-Diablo III, is whatever you happen to take away from that rushed experience. While you can let experienced players run ahead, they will open and close quests for you before you can arrive, and spend little time looking at new items and listening to dialogue and cutscenes (which, undoubtedly, is why you're playing). If you want to experience the series, you will most likely need to play alone or with friends as D2 online players rush through the game.
